The College of Marin (COM) has recently undertaken a system-wide upgrade of building and facilities on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley Campuses. Geosphere has provided the COM with Geotechnical Engineering consulting services for a variety of projects, including the Science and Math building, Performing Arts Center, Fine Arts Center, and the Child Development Center, all located on the Kentfield Campus. This sprawling campus has been developed over a variety of soil conditions, ranging from stiff soils over Franciscan bedrock to soft and liquefiable soils over steeply dipping rock. To accommodate this development, a combination of spread footings and drilled pier foundations has been utilized to account for the highly variable geologic site conditions.
The Geotechnical challenges involved in the project were as follows:
- Infrastructure
- Deep Foundation
- Liquefaction
- Soft Soil
- Hard Rock
- Expansive Soils
Geotechnical Services included the following:
- Geotechnical Site Investigation
- Engineering Consultation
- Foundation Construction Observation
- Earthwork Observation
- Testing Services
Client / Owner: College of Marin
Duration: 2009-present
Construction Cost: $150 million
